My name is John and I live in Orange County, CA: home of gated communities, great Mexican food, and anonymous neighbors. I grew up in Anaheim, CA where Mickey Mouse uses the Anaheim PD as his praetorian guard. I followed the rules, kept quiet, and didn’t get anybody pregnant. When I went to college, I majored in international studies to rebel against my Asian parents’ ideal of education and stability. Now I wish I would’ve majored in computer science, founded a dot.com company and eventually drown in a champagne-filled hot tub.
But instead, I worked in the mortgage banking industry after college. I went from job to job trying to weather the volatile period of 2005-2008. After losing my job and ending a life-changing relationship in 2008, I went back to school to get a master’s degree in clinical psychology. Ironically, near the end of my program, my extracurricular research into the marriage and family therapy field and growing interest in Occupy Wall Street, I got disillusioned with the California therapy scene. Yes, it is a scene. I still want to help people, but I’m not sure how that’s going to happen.
After I finished grad school, I tried to find a job in therapy but had no success. I ended back in the mortgage industry again only to be laid off recently (Friday the 13th of December and the HR rep’s last name was Voorhees – as in Jason Voorhees). Now, I’m unemployed and with no idea what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. Hopefully, WordPress will be a cathartic way to navigate post-employment America.
